DJ Deeon tribute Rinse FM

A four-hour tribute to the late DJ Deeon has aired on Rinse FM.

Following the sad news of the Chicago DJ and ghetto house pioneer's passing last week, friends and collaborators from across the spectrum of house and techno contributed to the broadcast, sharing rare tracks and remixes, as well as mini-mixes inspired by the him. Deeon previously presented the platform's Freak Mode Show.

Alan Fitzpatrick, Dance System, Ewan McVicar, Matthew Herbert, Nightwave, Elliot Adamson, Lauren Flax and Teki Latex were among the names involved in the Rinse marathon. In addition, a broadcast of Emerald's The Dance Show that featured DJ Deeon as a guest was repeated.

Widely considered one of the godfathers of ghetto house, a subgenre that emerged from Chicago's South Side in the early-1990s, which he once described as "for the strippers, for the street", Deeon had been active within the city's music scene since around 1980. News of his death broke on 18th July following years of financial struggle and serious health problems. Despite this, he remained a prolific producer and performer, with his last music dropping in May 2023.

You can listen to the full broadcast here, and revisit DJ Deeon's set from the DJ Mag HQ here.
