Legendary ‘90s club Wigan Pier site redevelopment to commence this year
The site will reportedly be turned into a wedding venue, gin distillery, microbrewery and food hall
The site of the legendary ‘90s club Wigan Pier is due to be redeveloped this year.
The multi-million-pound project will turn the final section of the former Wigan Pier nightclub, which was popular during the rave scene, into a wedding venue, gin distillery, microbrewery, and food hall, reports the BBC. There will also be scope for pop-up events.
Wigan Pier shuttered in 2011 following years of noise complaints, and the final section of the building was torn down in 2014. The club celebrated its 30th anniversary last May.
Plans to redevelop the site, which was originally a loading jetty for barges carrying coal to the Leeds-Liverpool Canal and immortalised in George Orwell's 1937 book 'The Road to Wigan Pier', were delayed by the Covid pandemic as well as surging costs.
Following the imminent completion of a new legal agreement between the developer and Wigan Council, the redevelopment could begin next month, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
