The Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer recorded the eight-track album with Jazz Is Dead founder Adrian Younge at Los Angeles Linear Labs studios in April 2018, two years before his death in April 2020. The LP is set to be released to mark what would've been Allen's 83rd birthday on 20th July.

"Despite the finite time that Allen had on this planet, as do all of us, his contributions to music are timeless and untouchable, and will continue to inform and inspire generations to come" the US label heads Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad said. "Jazz Is Dead is honored to have played a part in the legacy of Tony Allen and invites you to discover the unparalleled genius that shifted the entire world's conception of time, a magician who alchemized the past with the future and influenced countless listeners, currently and to come.”

After his death, Allen received the Outstanding Contribution to Music honour at the 2020 Association of Independent Music Awards. Damon Albarn, who had previously collaborated with Allen under his Gorillaz project, performed a tribute
