A court date has been set for trial of the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur.

On 4th June 2024, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the 60-year-old man arrested in September by Nevada police, will face trial for the fatal shooting of the late rapper. Davis is the first person to be arrested in direct connection with the killing, with police saying that three other suspects in the murder are all now deceased.

According to a report by AP, Davis, a former southern California street gang leader, had been known to investigators for some time. He had admitted in interviews and also in his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend that he was in the white Cadillac from which shots were fired at Shakur 27 years ago.

Last month, in the first court hearing since his arrest, a prosecutor added that Davis had also been charged with intent to promote and assist a criminal gang.

Davis, who has pleaded not guilty to the charge, has been given two court-appointed attorneys. His lawyers, Charles Cano and Robert Arroyo, said they intend to seek bail, explaining that they have yet to trawl through the “voluminous” evidence as described by prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo.

Earlier this month, Shakur was honoured with an Oakland street sign named after him.
