The industrial sounds of Tough Luck Records come under spotlight in our UK Underground label focus



Manchester duo Rae & Christian spearheaded the soul/funk-hop scene of the late '90s. Their Grand Central label released great music by Aim (including chill-out classic ‘Cold Water Music’), Riton, Boca 45 and more, not to mention their own superb two albums. 
‘Northern Sulphuric Soul’ — their fantastic debut opus of sunshine soul grooves and dope beats, which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize — and follow-up ‘Sleepwalking’ in 2002 featured guests such as Bobby Womack, Jeru the Damaja, The Pharcyde and the Jungle Brothers.

Tini Günter, better known by her stage name, tINI, is one of Germany's best-loved DJs. A well-established member of Loco Dice's Desolat family, she's been a lynchpin of the label's much renowned showcases — as well as their affiliated Artist Alife agency — for nigh on five years. A DJ of considerable repute, she's also a dab hand in the studio, as her 2011 long-player, 'Tessa', aptly demonstrated.

Drew Lustman, aka FaltyDL, grew up in Connecticut and after flunking out of college by doing too many drugs, was lucky enough to have his early music signed by Mike Paradinas, aka µ-Ziq, for Planet Mu Records in the UK. He moved to New York and began making mutated garage-influenced stuff, bringing in grime, dubstep, house and broken beat influences into his sound as it progressed and he became a favourite of the blogosphere and won supporters such as Thom Yorke from Radiohead and Flying Lotus.

AFTER his post-punk Pop Group project, madcap genius Mark Stewart started working with dub warrior Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound) on his groundbreaking, influential ‘Learning To Cope With Cowardice’ album. Released in 1982 and shot through with experimental dub and polemic, he then got into early hip-hop for his following three albums
