Canal Mills is being forced to close due to property development

A major blow to the Leeds club scene...

Canal Mills is being forced to close due to property development, with the final session set to take place on New Year's Day 2019.

The venue in Leeds, West Yorkshire, opened six years ago and quickly earned a reputation for big names and big production in an 18th Century industrial building. Alan Fitzpatrick, Bicep, DJ Hype, Artwork and Todd Terje are amongst those appearing in the final autumn-winter run, with Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor playing a Prince set on 1st December with disco legend Nicky Siano also on the bill.

“It is with a heavy heart we’ve had to announce the closing of Canal Mills," a statement from Director Mark Newton reads. "Although leaving a place with so many happy memories is a sad moment, it’s nice to do it on a high with the space being more popular than ever."

Plans for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day have not yet been confirmed.

This is the latest example of the difficulties many dancefloors face as a result of wider changes in their hometowns. The Warehouse Project in Manchester is about to embark on its final season at Store Street as a result of the 'evolution of the area', this year the UK government finally backed legal proposals to protect clubs from noise complaints, New York has just elected its first Nightlife Mayor to strengthen relationships between venues and city officials, while Berlin's council has pledged €1million to fund sound protection in a bid to avoid problems with neighbours.
