Premiere: Phasmid ‘Double Negative’

Leeds producer Phasmid flexes the unmistakable, bass-led sound of his Taipan Trax imprint with a new four-track V/A

Since launching in 2021, Leeds label Taipan Trax has become a magnet for intrepid up-and-comers from across the breaks continuum — championing dark, impactful productions spanning Detroit techno and electro, jungle, breakbeat, and 2-step. As the label hits the 50 tracks milestone, ‘TT001’ is a timely exhibition of the imprint’s sub-heavy dancefloor exploits to date, with label regulars and new artists surfacing for the ride.

Sydney-based selector and producer, DJ Sunroof kicks off the A-side. With no-nonsense dance discs on Break ‘N’ Pieces, Extra Spicy, and Finespun Recordings, his contribution is a suitably agile fusion of UKG and breaks, with a warping bassline that gets right down to business.

A2 comes courtesy of Taipan label head, Phasmid who serves up his own spacious breakbeat melter, ‘Double Negative’, while Bristol-based returner K-65 ventures into the dark underbelly of electro on B-sider ‘Kingpin’, fusing industrial bass, wubs, and 808s with rolling breaks and a 4x4 bounce.

The notorious Oldboy rounds out the tape. He might be known for his rough-and-ready garage bangers, but the London vocalist and DJ jacks up the tempo with ‘Scrap’, a gritty peak-time foray into the jungle/dnb arena with trademark Taipan bass.

‘TT001’ will be available physically and digitally from 14th July. Listen to ‘Double Negative’ below.
