Operators of Lisbon's non-profit arts space and club Arroz Estúdios are petitioning the city council to provide it with a permanent home due to the venue being at risk of closure for redevelopment.

Arroz Estúdios in Beato, Lisbon offers work studios for artists and space for multidisciplinary arts events. The Arroz Estúdios Association established the space in 2018, writing in its petition that it has garnered “70,000 members since its inception” and hosted 230 events in 2022 alone.

Earlier this week the association shared a statement on its website: “Facing eviction, Arroz Estúdios lacks a permanent home, limiting the association's potential impact.

“We humbly request your support in the form of provision of a permanent space. As a non-profit, Arroz Estúdios urgently needs governmental support to secure a lasting location, integrated into urban planning for their artistic community's growth.”

The statement also cited unnamed Lisbon venues which the association claims are under threat of closure.

“Arroz Estúdios isn't alone in facing the threat of closure. Numerous music and arts venues in Lisbon are experiencing similar challenges, with many forced to leave their spaces or forced outside of the city centre,” the statement added.

Donations towards operating costs in the intervening time are now being accepted by the club, which has played host to acts including Bambounou, DJ Danifox, rRoxymore, to “help sustain its operations and continue its vital work within the community”. You can donate here.
