Swedish House Mafia and IKEA collaborate on KALLAX unit for DJing

IKEA's ubiquitous cubed shelving unit — staples in the homes of vinyl collectors — gets an upgrade with the home DJ in mind

Swedish House Mafia and IKEA collaborate on KALLAX unit for DJing

The next phase of Swedish House Mafia's IKEA collaboration includes record shelving suited for a DJ setup.

Swedish House Mafia have given IKEA's cubed KALLAX shelving unit, frequently used by vinyl collectors, an upgrade for the home DJ. The OBEGRÄNSAD ("unlimited" in Sweish) edition of the KALLAX includes two rows of four cubes for record storage, topped with two slimmer sections across the length of the shelves for holding home DJ equipment like speakers, headphones, amplifiers and notes. The top shelf allows space for turntables, mixers and more.

"Many aspire to be a DJ, but not everybody has the opportunity to perform in front of a big crowd," IKEA creative head James Futcher said. "We learned a lot from Swedish House Mafia about the setups needed to make music. During the pandemic, we also started seeing people live stream DJ sets from their homes and studios using KALLAX as their stage. And we thought, 'There's a fun opportunity to do a small update of an iconic product for a collaboration around making and listening to music.'"

Previously revealed pieces in the collaboration include the FRAKTA record and tech equipment bags, record player, production and work desk, and an armchair

The OBEGRÄNSAD collection launches in stores next month.
