LA-based fragrance brand, Discothèque, has created a range of luxury scented candles inspired by the "unique atmosphere and cultural signifiance" of iconic nightclubs.

Described as “scents with soul”, the candles are inspired by clubbing landmarks from the seventies and early eighties – including Manchester's Haçienda, Crisco Disco, the legendary Paradise Garage, and the Mudd Club. The line was launched earlier this year with a disco ball-themed pop-up in Soho, London.

“The combination of candles and clubs came from our love of the energy on a dancefloor,” founders Jessie Willner and Hanover Booth told DJ Mag. “We believe nightlife, music and scent are intimately intertwined because they all create immersive sensory experiences. They have the power to evoke emotions, trigger memories, and transport us to different times and places.”

The range currently features nine club-inspired candles which were selected for their “unique atmosphere and cultural significance — the ones we wish we could teleport ourselves into in the present day.” The Hacienda-inspired candle combines notes of citrussy-gourmand mandarin, bergamot, and almond, while NYC dance spot, Crisco Disco features florals and petitgrain.

“When we set out to capture the essence of iconic clubs around the world, we knew there would be a fair bit of imagination involved... lest the outcome smell solely of cigarettes and booze,” the duo shared. “So we thought of how the clubs made those who were there feel, a combination of the atmosphere, music and sensations associated with it. Then we formulated scents made up of notes that have been known to evoke similar moods or sensations... with some creative liberties, of course.”

The “bougies parfumées” are filtered by club, mood, colour, and decade, and are designed to burn for approximately 45 hours. “The goal was to create a result that encapsulates the spirit of the club, so that anyone can take a little piece of those legendary parties home with them.”

Discothèque is looking to potentially expand the range of clubs immortalised as candles in the future. “We’ve intentionally focused on nightclubs that have mostly existed in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s... and there are still so many more we’re passionate about. But we love working on things that excite us, so if that happens with working on something more contemporary—then absolutely,” the duo said.

Discothèque’s candles are crafted and hand-poured in small batches in a UK atelier, and made using sustainable, high-grade vegan wax. The gradient glasses are also crafted by hand in the UK, and designed to remain in your home for other purposes after the candle has been burned.

The candles are available at Discothèque.
