The remix is an essential part of dance music tradition. Whether it is creating live edits in front of a crowd or preparing bootlegs to stand out - DJ culture has always been drawn to the art of taking an existing form and manipulating it into something fresh and exciting.

But to get you into the spirit we wanted to shine the light on five iconic dance music remixes. Tracks that truly celebrate this famous dance music tradition. Enjoy!

DEPECHE MODE ‘I FEEL LOVED (DANNY TENAGLIA’S LABOUR OF LOVE REMIX)’ New York house master Danny Tenaglia was nominated for a Grammy for his remix of Depeche Mode’s epic ‘I Feel Loved’. Combining the poignant lyrics of the original with a chunky, raw - and typically Tenaglia - beat and bassline, he created an after-hours epic that shines just as brightly today.

AZZIDO DA BASS ‘DOOMS NIGHT (TIMO MASS REMIX)’ The Timo Mass remix of ‘Dooms Night’ has become so ubiquitous that it is very hard to track down a clip of the original (we did the work for you). Timo Mass transformed a pretty nasty euro dance track, that had seen moderate success in Germany into a low slung monster that was played (and continues to be played) by DJs from the garage, house, trance and techno scenes.

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL ‘MISSING (TODD TERRY CLUB MIX)’ Sometimes things just come together perfectly. An easy listening jam from Everything But The Girl with an infectious vocal but insipid production has to be every remixers dream project. Bumping house don Todd Terry transformed the mood of the track simply by adding a house beat - probably the easiest remix he ever had to do, yet one of the finest examples of the transformative effect of the remix.

FUGEES ‘READY OR NOT (DJ ZINC REMIX)’ Not all remixes are commissioned by record label execs to widen their appeal. Dance music has long thrived on the bootleg or mashup - a way for DJs to stand out by creating unique material for use in their sets. DJ Zinc - in the height of his jungle popularity - took the haunting chords and vocal from the Fugees’ classic and ran it over an amen-laden jungle jam. Rumour has it that he made just £1 for every 300,000 records sold, due to the rate the white labels were being ripped off.

JUSTICE VS SIMIAN ‘WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS’ Although this eventually saw the light of day as a ‘Vs’ collaboration, Justice’s remix of Simian’s track of the same name is just one of those efforts that improves on the original to such a degree that it is hard to believe it did not come first. Simian eventually split up, with two of the members going on to form Simian Mobile Disco.
