Darude’s 1999 Eurodance track turned inescapable meme ‘Sandstorm’ is set to become to alarm sound of an actual sandstorm detector. Seriously.

A new initiative – Project Sandstorm –  has been started by Chin Stroke Research & Development which aims to design an early-warning system for areas and populations at risk from sandstorms. The alarm they are working on is designed to alter the speed and volume at which Darude ‘Sandstorm’ is played depending on the wind velocity and particle density.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by the the development team in order to raise the £5,000 necessary to “setting up and maintaining a 6-month pilot scheme in the Gobi Desert.”

As stated on their GoFundMe page, “the project is an early-warning sandstorm detector designed to emit an alarm when wind-speed and dust particulate density reach dangerous levels. Using a patented Darude™ early-warning system, Project Sandstorm notifies nearby populations of the speed and severity of incoming sandstorms – allowing them to differentiate between a catastrophic natural disaster and an everyday dusty gust.”

A prototype of the alarm was demonstrated at this year’s Bangface Weekender. You can watch a video of this very important and very serious contraption in action below.

Darude actually released a new track back in February, believe it or not
