Premiere: Morwell ‘Starlight’

Morwell fuses ‘90s rave nostalgia with nocturnal club modernity on his new EP, ‘Resonance’

Moorwell the big red bear with blue light around his eye

Morwell will release a new EP, ‘Resonance’, this week. Listen to ‘Starlight’ below.

The prolific UK-based producer, whose 2021 debut album ‘Souls’ stitched elements of jungle, breakbeat, footwork and dub into a ravey sci-fi tapestry, returns with an eight-tracker that once again examines the hardcore continuum’s past, present and future through a kaleidoscopic lens.

Flitting from the funkified UK garage and yearning bruk of opening tracks ‘Loving You’ and ‘Opened My Eyes’, into the festival-ready ecstasy of ‘Let Yourself Go’ and ‘Looking For Somebody’, the EP is inspired by Morwell’s formative years spent raving in the ‘90s, but he pulls equally from more recent, less euphoric pools. ‘Starlight’ is a nocturnal stepper in the dark garage mode, while bonus track ‘State Of Ecstacy’ pits the vocal sample from Burial’s ‘Archangel’ against that of N-Trance’s ‘Set You Free’.

It’s this deft fusion that allows Morwell to reflect on the lost utopian promise of rave’s hey-day, meshing those feelings and sounds with everything that’s come since. As the EP’s description puts it, these tracks explore the “sense of vertigo associated with looking simultaneously forwards and backwards in time”. It’s also just bangs.

‘Resonance’ will be released this Friday, 21st July. Pre-order it here
