Premiere: Russ Brooker ‘Microfilm’

Galway’s Rua Sound returns with a suite of tough-as-nails drumfunk, bruk and jungle from Russ Brooker

Rua Sound returns this month with Russ Brooker’s ‘97-98’ EP. Listen to ‘Microfilm’ below.

The Galway-based jungle/drum & bass label has always been one step ahead thanks to the keen ears of label bosses Rob Rua and Welfare. Since 2018, the label and its Foxy Jangle imprint have released a string of standout bangers from stars of the scene, including Sully, TMSV, Arcane and Tim Reaper.  By the quality on show here, we expect to hear a lot more from Russ Brooker too.

The EP’s title track is a chunky drumfunk number that erupts into full face-melter mode in the latter half, while ‘Microfilm’ brings similarly taut perc and guttural bass. ‘Breathe’ is as lush as they come, with echoes of ‘Heat’-era Wax Doctor. It’s huge.

The release comes near the end of a busy year for Rua Sound, which launched its Spheres release series in February with an EP from Noroi, followed by Prayer and others. In January, it released San’s ‘Under The Scope’ EP.

‘97-98’ will be released on 24th November. Pre-order it here.
