RepresentAsian has teamed up with the Asian Arts Agency to host free DJ workshops this summer for people of South Asian heritage.

The sessions, hosted by DJ’s Adeevah and Yusuf Suave, will provide a space for participants to learn about the diaspora’s contributions to the UK music scene, find their way around the decks, learn new techniques, and see what the world of DJing is all about. Apply here.

Hosted in collaboration with the Asian Arts Agency, RepresentAsian’s free ‘Intro to DJing’ workshops will take place at Pirate Studios, Bristol on 5th August (from 1-3PM, and 4-6PM). Applications are welcome from anyone between the ages of 18-30 from the South Asian community and living in Bristol or within a 10 mile radius. These are taster sessions and require no previous mixing ability.

Launched in 2021, RepresentAsian is a podcast and club night championing South Asian influence and talent in the dance and underground music community. The project was founded by Bristolian Pakistani siblings, Yusuf Suave, a booking agent and DJ, and freelance culture journalist, Safiya Bashir. Last year, the duo hosted their inaugural Bristol club night at The Crofters Rights.

Speaking on the new project, the duo said: “After a struggle to find new DJs to play at our nights across Bristol, we felt it was really important to get to the root of the problem and encourage a new generation of South Asian Djs in the city. We'd love to encourage people to try something new and if they love it – play at our future nights.”

Hosting the sessions will be Bristolian DJ and ‘Booty Bass’ member Adeevah, who learnt to DJ through Mix Nights, a non-profit organisation working to tackle gender imbalance in the music industry, and Yusuf Suave, who has been DJing in Bristol since 2009.

RepresentAsian recently announced that Season 3 of its podcast would be coming soon, sharing on Instagram: “Watch this space and get ready for new guests, new chat and NEW Desi Island Discs. We can't wait to continue the conversation..”

Apply to attend the free DJ workshops here –  applications are open until 23rd July. Find out more information here.

Last month, Dialled In – the London-based festival and event collective championing South Asian talent – announced its summer 2023 edition. Taking place in Walthamstow, East London, the festival will host sets from Ahadadream, Pxssy Palace, DJ Ritu, Bahrain duo Dar Disku, Daytimers’ Rohan Rakit, and many more.
