DJ Harvey soundtracks new London installation, including Paradise Garage footage

DJ Harvey has soundtracked a new audio-visual installation heading to London in the coming weeks, which includes rare footage from New York's legendary venue, Paradise Garage, taken during its closing party, circa 1987.

The work, entitled The Final Night in Paradise, comprises split screen monitors showing videos filmed inside the sorely-missed Stateside institution — regarded as one of the birthplaces of house music on the American East Coast and the spiritual home of disco. A host of genuine music icons appear, such as revered resident Larry Levan, who can be seen behind the hallowed decks, and Liz Torres and Gwen Guthrie, who also performed live at the last soiree.

The installation is happening at The Gallery, a former Victorian brothel in Shoreditch, and will be open to the public on 24th November, closing on the evening of 26th November. Admission is free. Village Underground, just next door, is hosting a closing party on the final evening, with Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, Nick The Record, and Jamie 3:26 slated to play.

Meanwhile, Paradise Garage will also be the subject of a new movie, which was announced more than a year before news hit that the building itself — 84 King Street, in the Hudson Square neighbourhood — is set to be knocked down.

Before the full length flick arrives, though, take a look at this short documentary on the nightspot, made by Jonathon Ullman, the director behind the forthcoming feature.

DJ Harvey is also up for a DJ Mag Best of British award next month and spoke to DJ Mag Ibiza back in August about his Mercury Rising residency at Pikes — read about it here.
