"We believe it's the perfect place to implement a no-phones policy," said James Hype

Hï Ibiza has added James Hype and Meduza’s upcoming Club Room residency to their recently-announced no phones policy.

Last month, the world's No.1 club introduced a no-phones-on-the-dancefloor rule during Damian Lazarus' residency in the Club Room. Now, English DJ and producer James Hype has announced that his summer residency with Italian trio Meduza will also adhere to this policy.

On 13th June, Hype – who featured in our How I DJ series in 2022 – shared a video on Instagram discussing the decision. He stated, "I've been part of several events over the past few years where no phones were allowed, and it completely changes the atmosphere from everyone's perspective. I think it's a better thing in certain environments."

He added, "[The Club Room of Hï Ibiza] is intimate. It's dark. There are no big screens to film. We believe it's the perfect place to implement a no-phones policy. So for the rest of the season, every Friday in the Club Room of Hï Ibiza, we request that you do not use your phone. See you on the dancefloor."

The introduction and now expansion of this no-phones policy is a significant move for Hï Ibiza, which was voted the No. 1 club in the world in DJ Mag's annual Top 100 Clubs poll for 2024. The club's other 2024 season residents include Eric Prydz, Tale of Us, The Martinez Brothers, and Patrick Topping.

Banning phones on the dancefloor, particularly for taking photos and videos, is becoming increasingly common, with clubs such as Nowadays in New York, and fabric and Fold in London adopting similar policies.

Back in 2018, a survey revealed that 70% of club-goers dislike people using their phones on the dancefloor. Revisit DJ Mag's article asking whether it's time for a total ban here.
