History of the synthesiser explored in new zine series

The zine series explores 46 of the most influential drum machines, synths and samplers

New zine on history of synths released

A new zine series has launched exploring the history of the synthesiser.

Out now and published through Velocity Press, the first two editions of ‘Synthesizer Evolution’, deep-dives into 46 of the most influential drum machines, synths and samplers from 1949 to 1996.

Each edition also includes detailed illustrations and insight into their development by the author of the series, Oli Freke.

The launch follows on from Freke’s book, ‘Synthesizer Evolution: From Analogue to Digital (and Back)’, which was released back in 2021.

Announcing the new zine series, Velocity Press posted on Instagram: “We are delighted to announce that Oli Freke, the author & illustrator behind ‘Synthesiser Evolution: From Analogue to Digital (and Back)’, has designed a beautiful Synthesiser Evolution A6 zine series.”

“The invention of the synthesizer in the 1960s inalterably changed the trajectory of music culture & production, as musicians discovered new ways to articulate their sonic worlds... Across 52 pages each, Oli’s titles, ‘Vintage Synths’ and ‘Drum Machines & Samplers’, feature 46 of the most influential, important and interesting synths, drum machines and samplers across history.”

Earlier this year, Velocity Press also published a zine collection celebrating dance music’s most important labels

You can pick up a copy of both editions of the new zine, ‘Vintage Synths’ and ‘Drum Machines & Samplers’ here.
